As if raising taxes to compensate for out-of-control government spending wasn’t enough, now the California Legislature wants you to do even more of the government’s work for them. In the wake of a recent gang-rape attack by thugs at a homecoming party in Richmond, California, the California Assembly overwhelmingly passed a bill putting an affirmative duty on their fellow citizens to report violent crimes or face up to six months in jail and a $1,500 fine. That’s right, all that simply for being witness to a crime and not reporting it!

This week, some countries have begun speaking out against the U.S. “occupation” in Haiti, with France and Venezuela leading the charge. Danny Glover has been too, but that nut is up there with Pat Robertson as far as divine conspiracy theories go. Either way, the typical imperialist resentment towards the United States is rearing its misguided head once again.

So it looks like California is trying to pull even with those crazy Zonies in the modern-day Gestapo category. For those that don’t know, the get-tough-on-crime social conservatives out in Arizona installed speed-sensor cameras on their freeways years ago. Now the stick-our-hands-further-into-the-electorate’s- pocket liberals in California are trying to do the same. That’s the bipartisan spirit!

For those who think I’m nothing but a naysayer, I have been on record saying that President Obama has thankfully followed Bush’s lead on the War on Terror (even if he refuses to call it that). To his credit, President Obama has delayed the closure of GITMO until a suitable replacement can be found, authorized strikes against terror cells, expanded the war in Afghanistan, and is now allowing Homeland Security to profile. Even though recent events have proven that President Obama holds absolutely no persuasion over most of our international friends, I still can’t complain about the terror aspect of his foreign policy.
